A Life Dedicated to Truth and Freedom
Gudleppa Hallikeri was a prominent force in the Indian freedom movement, a staunch social reformer, and a visionary educational leader. His extraordinary legacy stands tall in Karnataka's history. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's ideals of truth and non-violence, he led movements to uplift rural poor, organised campaigns in Kannada-speaking regions, and established educational institutions.
Known for his iron will and fearlessness, he earned the title 'The Iron Man of Karnataka'. Today, our institution proudly bears his name as a testament to his moral leadership, integrity, and dedication to social responsibility.

Roots in Hosaritti
Gudleppa Hallikeri was born on June 6, 1906 in Hosaritti village, Haveri district, to farmer couple Veerappa and Veeramma. He was the youngest of five sons. His parents passed away early in his childhood, and the family responsibility fell on his eldest brother Sangappa, who raised his younger brothers with great care and honesty. He was named after the revered 'Gudli Swamy Matha' of Hosaritti.
He displayed an innate mathematical genius from the age of 4-5, even before he could walk properly, prompting Sangappa to carry him on his shoulders to village fairs to showcase his talent to teachers and the public. In 1919 (age 13), he moved to Dharwad for studies, staying at Murughamatha's free hostel for five years under Sri Mrityunjaya Swamiji (his Deeksha Guru). He cleared matriculation in first class from RLS High School and then attended Karnataka College.

Dandi March and Salt Satyagraha
In 1927, he stopped his college studies to return to Hosaritti, founding the Bharatiya Taruna Sangha. Impressed by his English eloquence, the British District Collector of Dharwad once offered him a reward; Gudleppa refused personal gain and instead secured a donation from the official for his Gandhi institution. In 1928, he founded the Gandhi Ashram, organizing 5,000 volunteers (including 1,000 from Hosaritti) to join the national struggle.
In August 1920, he traveled to the Calcutta Congress Session just to see Mahatma Gandhi (his Shiksha Guru) from afar. He directly worked with him at the 1924 Belagavi Congress Session (held in Tilakwadi). During the 1930 Dandi March, he was chosen by Gandhi as one of the 78 Satyagrahis and walked to Ahmedabad. He was imprisoned multiple times during the Salt Satyagraha and Civil Disobedience movements, and received two years rigorous imprisonment during the 1942 Quit India Movement. In February 1943, he fasted for 21 days in Hindlagi Jail in solidarity with Gandhi's fast.

Repeated Imprisonments, Unwavering Spirit
Gudleppa Hallikeri was a lion for the British. Gandhi himself said: "I have added your name to the list of those who can give their heads and still serve Bharatmata." The British offered five thousand rupees to whoever captured him, and all his assets were confiscated. Yet his family never yielded — their home became known as a National Family. In July 1930, he surrendered himself and began his prison life.
He accepted imprisonment as simply as children play games — grinding 70 pounds of jowar daily in jail. He was imprisoned multiple times for his unwavering defiance; the punishment fell not only on him but on all members of his family. When Gandhi undertook a 21-day fast in Yerewada Jail in February 1943, Gudleppa undertook a 21-day fast in Hindlagi Prison near Belagavi in solidarity. In recognition of his service, Mahatma Gandhi awarded him AICC membership.

Marriage with Three Conditions
On October 2, 1937 — Gandhi's own birthday — Gudleppa Hallikeri's marriage took place very simply in Hosaritti. He married Gangadevi, the youngest daughter of Jnanamamma and Basalingappa Sanikoppa of Itagi, Belagavi district, with three non-negotiable conditions:
1) Wear khadi for life.
2) Serve Harijans and live among them.
3) Be prepared for all hardships and losses.
Gangadevi accepted all three conditions and entered the marriage.
Gudleppa, who dearly loved children, had a full and happy family of seven: Dr. Deenabandhu Hallikeri (eldest son), Premalattha Hallikeri (eldest daughter), Sangram Singh Hallikeri, Rajeshwari Hallikeri, Rajendra Prasad Hallikeri, Jayashree Hallikeri, and Dr. Chitranjan Hallikeri (youngest son).

Building Pillars of Education
In 1924, Gudleppa started a Middle School in Hosaritti with Mailara Mahadevappa, teaching national history to poor rural children and villagers. In 1963, he collected 6 lakh rupees in just three months and donated them to K.L.E. Society, enabling the establishment of an Arts and Science College — today's K.L.E. Society's Gudleppa Hallikeri Arts, Science and Commerce College, Haveri. He also played a key role in the College of Business Management (inaugurated by President Dr. Radhakrishnan in 1963) and Nijalingappa College in Rajajinagar, Bengaluru.
From around 1947, Gudleppa nurtured the dream of a medical college in Hubballi. Starting in 1957 and completing in 1960, Karnataka Medical College was established through his efforts. He also contributed to establishing Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belagavi. He served as a member of the Indian delegation to China for 60 days in September 1954 under the Hindi-Chini Bhai Bhai agreement, and in April 1960 he visited Germany, England, France and Egypt as part of a Parliamentary delegation.

Gandhi Grameena Gurukul
Inspired by Rabindranath Tagore's Shantiniketan and Vishwa Bharati, Gudleppa Hallikeri's dearest wish was to establish a Gurukul in Hosaritti — where rural children could stand on their own feet, develop love for the country, and build their future. When he turned 60 on June 6, 1966, he said he would celebrate his birthday only if it was dedicated to establishing such a Gurukul. He had already selected 32 acres on the outskirts of Hosaritti for this purpose.
After Gudleppa's passing, this dream was realised through the special efforts of his eldest son Dr. Deenabandhu Hallikeri. The Gandhi Grameena Gurukul Residential School, built on 32 acres, was inaugurated on Gandhi Jayanti — October 2, 1984 — by Finance Minister S. R. Bommai. Self-reliant education and the imbibing of Indian culture are its hallmarks. Dr. Deenabandhu also established the Shri Gudleppa Hallikeri Smarak Pratishtana and continues to infuse new life into the Gurukul.
